Coil Off Disconnect
Coil Off Disconnect

Weird electrical setup.?
Okay I have a moped, two cycle, ran off the flywheel coils, and the brake switches and horn switch on it, both DISCONNECT the line, when PRESSED. one wire goes in, one comes out, and the switches when NOT being pressed, are connecting the wires, when you PRESS them, it DISCONNECTS the bridge. How is that supposed to engage the lights? does it have anything to do with a "double zener diode" ?
When the brake lamp is not on and the horn button is not pushed, the alternator output is fed through the normally closed horn button contacts and then tied to ground by the two brake light switches.
Operating either brake light switch, breaks the path to ground and the brake lamp lights.
Pushing the horn button routes the power through the horn to the brake lever switch ground, making the horn blow.
If you also operate either brake lever, the horn and brake lamps are in series so you get a half bright light and a half assed horn.

motorcycle trouble?
im having starting problems with my yamaha 81 virago. The engine does not turn over easily unless the battery is fully charged using a trickle charger. I realized that after riding for a while then turning the engine off, it needs to cool off for sometime before it starts (the battery strains to turn over). This made me think that either the battery or the regulator is broken. When i rev the engine the headlights get dimmer. Also i notice that when i disconnect the regulator/rectifier the idle engine sounds alot stronger than when it is plugged in. Using a volt meter i also saw that when i disconnect the regulator when the engine is running the voltage across the battery drops, then increases when i connect it again.
does anyone know whether it is the regulator or battery? i dont think it is the stator coil, but i could be wrong
Test across the battery with the regulator connected, engine revving to 3,000 rpm. You should see a reading of somewhere around 14 -14.5 Volts
If the reading is high, then the rectifier is shot, but you'd probably see a boiling battery if that was the case.
If the reading is low, you need to check the alternator.
Fully charged, your battery should maintain a little over 13 Volts. If you see the voltage dropping without using it, then you probably have dead cell.
I rode an '84 650 Suzuki Savage that had a compression release valve to ease starting. I don't know if your Virago has one but you may want to look into that, as well.
